Problem and Client Goals
Problem: Stale monthly safety training now needing to be done online due to COVID-19. Staff is not tech savvy but Microsoft Teams meetings were boring and not very effective.
Goals: Free, interesting, interactive, online learning system, covering topics that were applicable to the workers. A year's worth of topics were desired along with a take-home sheet/materials for post-training reference.
Consultation
A quick manual sketch (done Sketchnote style) was done to capture some of the client's requests for training topics. Topics included chainsaw safety, lifejacket safety, slips/falls, ergonomics, psychological safety, boat safety, confined spaces, vehicle safety, toxic plants, lifting safety, ladder safety, and WHMIS.
Due to the topic matter, they indicated they would prefer photo-realistic images.
Videos were ruled out as the staff zoned out during them, but they did like the previous WorkSafe "Spot the Hazards" posters. Gamification or interactive activities were indicated as ideal.
Content Mapping
The client referenced WorkSafeBC's website as a starting source of information for each session, as they wanted to be sure that they were following government approved resources. These provided some main "takeaways" of knowledge that could be taught about each topic - these main takeaways created the basis of the each e-learning course as the intended outcomes.
A visual layout of each session was created using Canva, which is a platform with free options. These sketchups were reviewed prior to creating each session.
As long as the sessions in the program followed information from WorkSafeBC and met their goals, we had free rein to create a fun e-learning program and associated materials!
Prototyping
A free web-based application was requested, as the organization was looking to keep training costs low for this sample program. They were happy if the materials could be used by another organization and were willing to "open source" the end product.
The platform chosen was EdApp for this particular project as it was free (or low cost), and aligned with the organization goals to #EducateAll. A working prototype was created for the client to walk through the program.
Using Canva (another free platform), I created drafts for the take-home job aids to go along with the e-learning modules. Examples of the job aids from the Toxic Plants module are shown below.
